The Best Sushi in Town?

Suzuran in South Yarra is a new kid on the block but then again in a city with more sushi joints than Starbucks, that's not saying much. To its credit The Writer tells me that its Camberwell sister has been there for 15 years and thinks the newbie is better than the original. I was probably drawn in by the shelves filled with sweet treats such as green tea ice cream, Pocky and red bean cakes which I browse while my order is prepared. The Camberwell shop has a much wider variety that will equip you to prepare almost any Japanese meal at home.

Back to the sushi. The freshness is unbeatable, the service is exceptional and it's excellent value for money. There is not a pre-made handroll in sight! A sushi and sashimi box will set you back $11.50 and a sashimi platter for two is $18.00. You'll be hard pressed to find a better value meal in South Yarra. Worth a try if you're not too ashamed to admit you like them are the California Rolls at $11.25 for 8 of the biggest pieces you'll ever see.

I never actually venture down into South Yarra, but might venture down to check out the treats this store has to offer...especially the green tea ice cream :P

This sounds very interesting. I work near by and am very appreciative to hear about good lunch food locally. Will check it out in the next few days and let you know how I go...
Thanks for the tip.

Hope you like it Ellie. The Camberwell one has a much larger variety of Japanese goodies and sweet treats.

Let me know how it goes Jack. It's not show stopping but a good deal better than the usual $2 handroll joints.

I made it there on Thursday and I have to say it was pretty good. Yes, much better then the $2 handrolls (and much pricier)but it had love. I had the sushi and sashimi platter and got some nigiri unagi (eel sushi)extra. See my site in the next few days for further comments.
Thanks for the tip off!

Thanks for the review Jack. Will look out for the full one on your blog.

I agree it's a bit pricey but I'm always so full afterwards that I can't help but consider it good value. If you turn into a regular the staff seem to become warmer and more helpful.

Have you tried Jamon Sushi before?
It is on 3 Murphy St, South Yarra, very close to South Yarra train station.

This is the kind of place that will satisfy those demanding nothing less than perfection!

Bizarrely, the chef is Australian yet the food is unbeatably good!
